had reported getting harassing emails from another woman, paula broadwell. the f.b.i. investigation that followed uncovered broadwell's affair with petraeus. but according to the newest revelations, agents also found extensive contacts between kelley and general allen. the f.b.i. notifieded the pentagon on sunday. last night spokesman george little read a statement from defense secretary leon panetta on a flight to australia. >> today the secretary directed that the matter be referred to the inspector general of the department of defense for investigation. it is now in the hands of the department of the secretary-general. >> brown: early news accounts said allen and kelley exchanged 20,000-30,000 pages of emails and other documents over the last two years. for part of that time the general served as deputy commander at u.s. central command faced at the air force base in tampa. jill kelley and her hus ban often organized social events for the military. one senior defense official said today that the emails between allen and kelley were mostly routine and involved planning for parties

there is new information in that widening scandal about the fbi probe and the two women in the center of it all, tampa socialite jill kelley and paula broadwell. some ask why did the fbi wait to notify them about the investigation and why the director of national intelligence was not informed until election night. given that the investigation had been under way for months. now the white house was squiz quizzed yesterday on whether the president is satisfied with that time line. first at a news conference in australia where secretaries panetta and clinton are holding bilateral meetings, they should hold opinion until the facts are known about general allen, the latest -- >> no one should leap to any conclusions. no one should leap to any conclusions here. general allen is doing an excellent job. he certainly has my continued confidence to lead our forces and to continue the fight. but his nomination has been put on hold. as a prudent measure until we determine what the facts are. >> and though he praised allen, panetta said he felt it was important to refer the matter to the pentagon's inpeck to

, the woman that petraeus' mistress allegedly sent threatening e-mails to you. the fbi reportedly uncovered 20,000 to 30,000 allegedly inappropriate e-mails between allen and kelley. she's a social liaison at the military base in florida. the general insists he's friends with kelley, but paula broadwell apparently saw her as a romantic rival. the fbi is keeping quiet of a search of broadwell's home. agents searched her home for five hours last night. they left with several boxes. broadwell's relationship with petraeus first came to light when the fbi began investigating jill kelley's claims that broadwell had sent her threatening e-mails. and the fbi is putting together a time line of the investigation to explain to members of congress why they were kept out of the loop until recently. they didn't know about the probe until last tuesday even though it had been going on for months. senate intelligence chair dianne feinstein said she learned about it from the media last week. meantime, she says petraeus will still testify before the committee about last month's deadly attack on the embassy in li

secretary leon panetta disclosed a dramatic turn in the petraeus case. fbi investigators had uncovered what the pentagon called potentially inappropriate communications between the general and jill kelley whom he and his wife got to know in tampa and were revealing between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of documents including e-mails over two years. officials say some were flirtatious, but the general strongly denies an improper relationship. the fbi discovered the e-mails during its investigation of kelley's e-mails, sparked by her complaints about anonymous threats which turned out to be from paula broadwell. they say they found no wrongdoing by general allen but turned the files over to the pentagon which monday ordered its inspector general to investigate. a social link between the two four-star generals, jill kelley who enjoyed socializing with the powerful in tampa while doing volunteer work for military families. she also gave people the impression she had some kind of state department status which officials say she does not. in fact, last weekend, she called police complaining about media

is the woman in tampa who first alerted the fbi that she was getting inappropriate e-mails. that eventually led to the disclosure, officials say, of an affair between david petraeus, the director of cia, and paula broadwell. the author of those e-mails. in getting access to the e-mail accounts of both women, the fbi officials say there were e-mail discovered between general allen and jill kelley. now they've been described as inappropriate although general allen's people say that that is a wild mischaracterization. that he occasionally referred to her as sweetheart but it was affectionate. that they were family friends and there was nothing untoward. there is a second element to all this. the pentagon in disclosing all this this morning that there were 20,000 to 30,000 pages, but again, associates of general allen say that that is printouts that often include multiple copies of the same e-mail. that they did a new printout every time there was a new e-mail in the chain which greatly they say exaggerates the number of e-mails. there is one other element here. general allen was to have a confirma

that an ethically sketchy, politically motivated fbi agent could spark an incendiary federal investigation tunnelling into private lives to help a woman he liked and later blow it up to hurt a president he didn't like. it's also worrisome that the nation's spymaster who had presided in the military where adultery could result in court-martial could not have found a more clandestine manner of talking naughty to his biograph biographer, baby, than a gmail drop box used by terrorists, teenagers and authors. the scandal is a good reminder that although mccain and palin earned total trust, these guys are human beings working under extremely stressful circumstances, and their judgments are not beyond reproach. one of the elements of the story that hasn't been referred to greatly in all of the coverage because of the obvious, that's atop the coverage, is the repeated assignments to iraq and afghanistan. not only among the brass but obviously the deployments, among the troops, seven, eight, nine deployments. it takes -- exacts a crushing burden on families. >> i mean, in the heart of this whole st
